The Methodology

To figure out the best cities for dating, WalletHub, a personal finance website, compared 182 cities in the US across three dimensions.

They measured the economic, recreational, and dating aspects in each city on a 100-point scale. Every city could earn as much as 25 points in terms of economics, 25 in recreation, and 50 in dating opportunities.

Housing affordability, meal costs, and household income were the main considerations on the economic scale. Per capita counts of restaurants, fitness centers, coffee shops, parks, and shops were tallied under recreational opportunities. Finally, gender balance, share of single population, active Tinder users, and mobile or online dating opportunities were scored in dating opportunities.

Based on all these factors, the following are the top cities for dating in the US.

10. Tempe, Arizona

First on our list, Tempe, Arizona. The city placed 10th among 182 cities in the US, as it finished with a score of 61.49 points. It scored highest in terms of economics, followed by dating opportunities, and lastly in recreational opportunities.

That being said, there are a number of things to do in Tempe. Feeling outdoorsy? Go for a hike or head over to Tempe Town Lake, “a big lake within a big city within a big desert.”

If you're more of an indoor person, try a luxurious movie-going experience at AMC Centerpoint 11 located at the heart of Downtown Tempe. You can also ask your date to go with you to the Tempe Festival of the Arts, one of the longest-running arts festivals in the country.

9. Boise, Idaho

Boise, Idaho is a rugged, untouched, but beautiful and perfect state for outdoor warriors. It beat 172 other cities as it earned its 9th spot in our rankings.

The city had steady scores in all three dimensions that helped catapult it to the top 10 of the rankings. Boise, Idaho earned a cumulative score of 61.51 out of 100 points.

8. Portland, Maine

Sitting comfortably along the southern coast of Maine (and on the 8th spot in WalletHub's rankings), the city is famous for being the center of the region's tourism, growth, and economy.

It ranked 20 in terms of recreational and dating opportunities. However, its lower score in economic opportunities prevented it from going up higher as it secured a final score of 61.89 points.

7. Missoula, Montana

The outdoor opportunities in this city that is known for its stunning natural beauty are simply endless. Famous for its blue-ribbon trout fishing, Missoula, Montana reeled in the 7th spot on the list of the best cities for dating in the US.

Home to some of the lowest wine and beer prices in the entire country, the city scored a total of 62.24 points out of 100. It got its biggest pull from dating opportunities, where it ranked 5th in the entire country.

6. Fargo, North Dakota

The largest city in North Dakota is also one of the most vibrant dating scenes today. It is home to a number of famous museums, eating establishments, entertainment venues, and of course, football powerhouse North Dakota State University.

Fargo, North Dakota's high ranking in terms of dating and economic opportunities made up for its relatively lower performance in recreational opportunities. This allowed it to finish at 6th place, with a final score of 62.56 points.

5. Columbia, South Carolina

Now for the top five! First up: “Famously Hot” Columbia, South Carolina.

The city ranked 8th in terms of dating opportunities. This was able to pull up its less impressive performances in economic and recreational opportunities. This gives it a score of 62.71 points out of 100.

The city proudly promotes its so-called “hot status,” as it boasts a number of activities both in the city itself, and in the surrounding areas called The Midlands.

4. Salt Lake City, Utah

Based on WalletHub's data, the home of NBA team Utah Jazz was able to secure the 4th place in their rankings. It ranked relatively high scores across all three dimensions.

With a 5th place finish in recreational opportunities, 40th in economic opportunities, and 65th in dating opportunities, the city scored a total of 62.9 points.

3. Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado, with a total score of 63.14 points, finishes 3rd. Its 108th place in economics was pulled up by its high finishes in dating and recreational opportunities.

Denver is famous for being an outdoor city filled with thriving craft breweries and world-class cultural attractions. Of course, these are all a stone's throw away from the renowned landmark, the Rocky Mountains.

2. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta, Georgia, deservingly called by some as “Hotlanta,” places 2nd overall with a score of 65.51 points out of 100. The city is not only famous for its Southern hospitality and a number of sports franchises, but also its diverse musical heritage.

It ranked 3rd in recreational opportunities and 9th in dating opportunities. However, its 109th place in terms of economics prevented it from securing the top place.

1. Madison, Wisconsin

Said to be one of the best American cities, Madison, Wisconsin scored the highest overall ranking in all categories. The city is known for its vibrant cultural scene, as it boasts a number of first-rate galleries and museums, popular fireworks and music events, and even some extensive bike trail networks.

It finished 76th in economics, but 12th in recreational opportunities and 2nd in dating opportunities. With an overall score of 66.48 points, Madison, Wisconsin is the number 1 city for dating for men over 40.
